Abstract :
Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution´s two manned submersibles, JOHNSON-SEA-LINK I & II were pressed into service to assist in locating, identifying, documenting and ultimately recovering many key pieces of the ill-fated space shuttle CHALLENGER The JOHNSON-SEA-LINKs, previously known for pioneering efforts in marine science research, proved to be valuable assets in the search and recovery operation. Their capabilities became evident from the onset when J-S-L II documented and mapped a large area of right solid rocket booster debris at a depth of 1285´.
