  • Abstract
For full color organic EL displays such as those using patterned RGB emitters or color fluorescent modules, it is necessary to produce blue EL devices with appropriate chromaticity and stability. We report here several classes of novel blue emitting materials suitable for use as the emissive as well as the electron-transport layer in organic EL devices, Novel blue emitting materials designed and synthesized in this study include: (1) tris(4-hydroxy-1,5-naphthyridine)aluminum (NAlq), (2) N-arylbenzimidazoles such as PBIP, PBIBp, and TPBI, and (3) metal chelates of 2-(N-phenyl-2-benzimidazolyl)phenol such as Al(PBI)/sub 3/ and Be(PBI)/sub 2/.
