Abstract :
A novel method, based on the use of a linear CCD (charge coupled device) array, of determining the presence probability distribution (PPD) of dispersing particles in a turbulent flow is presented. The results obtained by this technique in a flow between two parallel plates are compared to those given by LDV (laser Doppler velocimetry) counting measurements under the same experimental conditions. Very good reliability is shown by comparison with LDV counting measurements. The proposed method requires some care in the adjustment of the optical apparatus, but, when this is achieved, it is far more rapid than LDV
