Abstract :
This paper illustrates that eddy currents can occur in the windings of a switched reluctance motor (SRM) which increase the losses. It is asserted that coil turns at the top of a phase winding often experiences a high variation in flux density leading to elevated losses. In machines that are thermally marginal or operate at high speed, and in large machines with large conductor cross-section, it may be necessary to include the FE mesh calculation in the design procedure to assess the thermal integrity of the machine.
