  • Abstract
Summary form only given. Optical properties of materials can be retrieved through a complete characterization in intensity and phase of a laser pulse after propagation into the sample. Among all the available techniques, the frequency domain phase measurement (FDPM) technique does offer a direct reconstruction of the pulse without any iterative algorithm and this approach has been applied to analyze the behaviour of the phase for /spl chi//sup (2)/ cascading processes. The cascading effect has been proposed to compensate the self-phase modulation in nonlinear propagation as an adjustable effective third-order nonlinearity. This can be easily seen in the time domain and the corresponding sonogram results have been obtained for a BBO crystal.
