  • Abstract
    Summary form only given. Passive Q-switching of solid-state lasers with solid-state saturable absorbers is a very attractive Q-switching technique because it allows to develop compact and low-cost laser sources of nano-and subnanosecond pulses for various applications. In this connection, the Co/sup 2+/-doped materials are very attractive because of they possess saturable absorption in the eye-safe spectral range. We report the relaxation times of the /sup 4/A/sub 2//spl rarr//sup 4/T/sub 1/(/sup 4/F) absorption bleaching and absorption cross sections at 1.3 /spl mu/m and 1.54 /spl mu/m as well as passive Q-switch provenance at 1.34 /spl mu/m of the Co/sup 2+/:LiGa/sub 5/O/sub 8/ (LGO) and Co/sup 2+/:MgAl/sub 2/O/sub 4/ (MALO) crystals.
