Abstract
A new and simple method has been developed for dramatically improving the energy conversion efficiency of three-phase induction motors under a pulse width modulation (PWM) supply. This is important as three-phase induction motors are widely used in industry with PWM supplies for variable speed drives. This will have a substantial impact on the cost associated with compensating for losses. This paper shows the effect of chording on three-phase squirrel-cage induction motors fed from a three-phase PWM voltage source inverter at different switching frequencies.
