Abstract
Summary form only given. Previous literature demonstrates that neodymium doped Ca/sub 4/GdO(BO/sub 3/)/sub 3/ crystals combines advantageously nonlinear optical properties with an ability to amplify the light and is of interest as a self-frequency doubling material. Ca/sub 4/GdO(BO/sub 3/)/sub 3/ crystals doped with Eu/sup 3+/ and Tm/sup 3+/ are investigated to get more detailed knowledge on number of activator crystal-fields sites and processes contributing to the relaxation of rare earth ions in this matrix. It has been found that multiphonon relaxation plays a dominant role in the relaxation of excited states of Tm/sup 3+/ ions.
