Abstract :
Summary form only given, as follows. A combined infrared-optical frequency standard scheme has been demonstrated using a single ion of ytterbium. The optical /sup 2/S/sub 1/2 /-/sup 2/D/sub 5/2/ reference transition at 411 nm and the infrared /sup 2/F/sub 7/2/-/sup 2/D/sub 5/2/ 3.43 μm transition were driven sequentially. A measurement of the 3.43 μm transition frequency has been made.
