Abstract :
This paper studies a multimedia medium access control (MAC) protocol. The motivation behind this activity is to develop a MAC protocol that can support multimedia services (e.g., voice, video, and data) using asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) in personal communication systems/networks (PCS/PCN). The protocol developed contains some features of existing protocols (e.g., ALOHA, time division multiple access (TDMA), code division multiple access (CDMA)). In particular, it is a slotted, frame-based protocol with multiple transmissions per slot and with priority for delay sensitive traffic (e.g., voice, video). A discrete-time, discrete-state Markov chain is used to evaluate the performance (e.g., throughput and delay) of the voice and the data transmissions
