Abstract :
An event-driven simulation model was developed to estimate the balance the hardware resources needed to support dedicated UNIX PC-based application systems. The authors describe the simulation approach, the software package developed, and the tool used to generate the model and collect data from it. Novel elements of this research include (1) simulation of software that reacts to changes in its external environment and (2) a methodology for using UNIX tools to estimate system characterization parameters. Results obtained using the model were validated by comparing them with data collected from an actual system.<>
