Abstract
Summary form only given. Nonlinear periodic structures have been receiving increasing interest because of their potential applications. Previously proposed devices rely on optical bistability. We have proposed all-optical limiters, switches, as well a complete set of logic gates, an analog-to-digital converter, and an all-optical subtractor that rely on the nonlinear but stable response of periodic structures. We apply analytical and numerical techniques to explore the stability of multilayer structures. We investigate how the stability of input output intensity relationships depends on the material nonlinear properties.
