Abstract :
To fully realize the technology benefits and meet the multimedia service requirements advanced integrated communication system architectures must be developed both in commercial and military environments. This paper addresses the technical challenges such as multiprotocols, standards, and network management issues for integrating terrestrial networks with SATCOM systems. For example, the DISN goal architecture uses the protocols and standards associated with BISDN and ATM network implementations. To achieve truly seamless and scalable network system via a global transmission fabric the protocol standards which require modifications are presented. To support the future highly mobile and dispersed military traffic, a teleport interface for a DISN is discussed. This teleport addresses the future needs of increased throughput and interoperability among mobile users. The multifunctional capabilities of the teleport, e.g., hub function for the hub/spoke networks, gateway, switching and processing, and network control functions are discussed. Performance issues for teleport modeling are identified
