Abstract :
Downsizing and centralization of military elements has caused an increase in user demands for the transport of large amounts of data within the Pacific theater. This demand has increased the need to modernize the Defense Switched Network (DSN) in order to offer higher speed data service to its customers. Increased requirements for the transport of textual, database, imagery and video products between various locations are exceeding the capabilities of voice grade modem networks. The Defense Information System Agency-Pacific (DISA-PAC) has embarked on a program to modernize system capabilities by “widening the information highway” to provide switched 56 kbps and integrated services digital network (ISDN) services to support these demands. This paper reviews the progress, pilot programs, problems, service availability and implementation status of this effort
