Abstract :
Summary form only given. The possibility to elaborate RE (RE=Eu,Er and/or Yb) doped crystallised yttrium oxide (Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/) planar waveguide structures is investigated. Crystalline thin films of RE/sup 3+/ doped and undoped Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/, are grown by a pulsed laser deposition technique (PLD). It is interesting to analyse if crystallised thin films, which produce higher absorption and emission cross sections, are compatible with guiding properties. The composition, structure and orientation of the films are determined by the use of Rutherford back scattering (RBS) and X-ray diffraction.
