Abstract :
In the present talk we describe some of the recent work done at our laboratory, using beam expanding waveguides. Beam expanding technology is important for low cost devices that are going to be used in fiber to the loop (FTTL) applications. We will discuss in detail the performance of a single electroabsorption modulator with 7 dB fiber to fiber insertion loss, and modulators with an integrated optical amplifiers with 9 dB fiber to fiber gain. In both cases, the use of beam expanders allows coupling losses lower than 2 dB/facet with relaxed alignment tolerances
