Abstract
Summary form given. Portable and rather inexpensive optical devices to determine blood oxygen saturation in the brain are potentially suited for continuous bedside monitoring of patients with cerebrovascular disease. Two different objectives are addressed in this contribution: (i) quantitation of changes in blood volume and oxygenation, e.g., caused by functional stimulation of the brain, (ii) determination of absolute values of blood oxygen saturation in the brain.
