Abstract
Summary form only given. The goal of our experiment was to enhance the output power of an end pumped Nd:YVO/sub 4/ microchip laser without decreasing the beam characteristics by placing a Nd:YAG crystal behind it and adding an external output mirror. This resulted in a coupling of the microchip resonator with the external resonator including the Nd:YAG crystal. The idea behind this simple setup was to achieve lasing with the Nd:YVO/sub 4/ acting as the master oscillator and the Nd:YAG as the power amplifier. Ideally, this should result in polarized, single longitudinal and transverse mode operation at higher output powers than the microchip on its own.
