Abstract :
In this paper, the single-mode operation of conventional and photonic crystal fibers are investigated, using the finite element method. In order to confirm the validity of two common formulations, which exist to describe the V-parameter in photonic crystal fibers, both of these formulations are studied and their results are compared, which are obtained by solving the eigenvalue problem, derived in finite element method. As it will be shown, both formulations lead to the same result.
