Abstract :
A new type of silicon waveguide - photonic crystal (PC) cladded waveguide has been developed based on the photonic band gap (PBG) principle. The refractive index in the core of the new PC cladded waveguide has large flexibility; and a low index core (e.g. SiO2) or even a hollow core waveguide can be realized. Potential applications include high power transmission, low dispersion, thin cladding thickness, nonlinear properties engineering as well as biomaterials sensor on silicon chip.
