Abstract :
We show that the Laplacian pulse width is better than the RMS pulse width when one wishes to judge whether an optical pulse is transform-limited or not. The Laplacian pulse width and RMS chirp of optical pulses may be used to calculate filter loss, and they can also be used in soliton transmission, ring lasers, prechirping techniques, and optical pulse compression by grating pairs
