Abstract :
Using the measurement technique of frequency resolved optical gating, we have simultaneously determined the nonlinear refractive index (n2) and group velocity dispersion of Coming SMF-28 fibre over the wavelength range 1534-1560 nm. In this paper we present a novel and convenient measurement technique which allows the simultaneous measurement of the nonlinear refractive index n, and the group velocity dispersion (GVD) of a short length of single mode fibre. We use frequency resolved optical gating (FROG) to completely characterise the intensity and phase of an optical pulse before and after propagation in a length of fibre where the pulse evolves under the combined effects of self phase modulation (SPM) and GVD
