Abstract
As telephone companies begin to offer ISDN services, quantitative reliability objectives for ISDN switching systems become important in ensuring reliable service to the subscribers. Using a generic reference architecture for ISDN switching systems, service impairments and switching system failures that affect different types of ISDN basic rate access (BRA) users are studied. The probable causes leading to these impairments and failures are pointed out. The results of this study will be used to establish quantitative ISDN switching system reliability objectives
