Abstract
Multiple trellis-coded modulation (MTCM) is used in conjunction with a frequency/phase modulation scheme. While conventional 2D trellis coders output one channel symbol per trellis branch, multiple trellis coders output more than one channel symbol per trellis branch. It is shown that the combination of multiple trellis coding and 4D BFSK/MPSK modulation can yield substantial coding gains over the 2D multiple trellis coded modulation technique, while incurring a slight increase in transmitter bandwidth. Furthermore, 4D MTCM schemes which possess noninteger throughput have been designed. It is shown that these combined modulation/coding schemes offer a favorable tradeoff between coding gain and spectral efficiency
