Abstract
The computing environment at Ameritech features a distributed telephone network and a wide range of applications. In order to examine the role of knowledge-based tools for information access in a distributed network and the concept of a standard human-machine interface for varied applications, a prototype called KIS (knowledge-based information-access system) has been developed. KIS provides an integrated presentation of the different forms of data, such as text and graphics. The KIS model attempts to separate the semantics of the user interface from those of an application. The applications include the development of knowledge-based models for adaptive presentation and the development of communications protocols
