Abstract :
The results of a 12-month characterization of tandem digital radio links within the Digital European Backbone (DEB) of the US Defense Communications System (DCS) are discussed. The collected data are used to characterize end-to-end performance on a tandem microwave system consisting of several digital line-of-sight links and one digital troposcatter link. The performance data are compared with both CCITT and Military Standard (MIL-STD) performance criteria. The data are also used in the assessment of the causes of digital radio outages. Performance objectives are contrasted with operation and maintenance standards by differentiating between predictable outages (e.g., equipment and propagation) and anomalous outages
