  • Abstract
A bandwidth assignment procedure derived from the class related rule (CRR) is proposed for ATM networks with two bearer capabilities. This procedure has been modified to account for both implicit and explicit priority assignments. A performance analysis has been carried out by simulation, and the results illustrate the effectiveness of using priorities in managing the network resources. The numerical results presented refer to the case of only two traffic classes, but the use of CRR can be extended to any number of classes with no additional computational complexity. The different alternatives in implementing priority mechanisms are analyzed, and the adopted network and source model used in the simulation studies is described. The performance of the bandwidth assignment technique with overwriting priority is presented and compared with the case of no priority. Conclusions and topics for further study are given
