Abstract :
A burst-traffic control strategy that uses the virtual cell loss probability as a method of estimating service quality on the cell transfer level is proposed. The virtual cell loss probability for each traffic source is obtained from only average and maximum bandwidths and has the robustness to withstand changes in burst duration parameters that seriously affect quality estimations by conventional methods. It is shown that the burst-traffic control method guarantees services qualities for individual cells even in heterogeneous traffic environments and is well suited for asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks. providing high bandwidth efficiency and ensuring the required service quality in a simple manner
