Abstract
To face the new challenges created by the evolution of data centre technology and architecture it is necessary to go beyond the modularity and scalability concepts used so far, which imply a linear growth of data processing environments. New technology trends have ultimately discarded a gradual approach to the expansion of data processing capacity: the introduction of high density solutions (blade servers and grid solutions) has caused an "evolution leap" in datacentres, opening up new opportunities in terms of performance (data processing speed) and total cost of ownership (TCO) reduction (smaller footprint, and improved system management and monitoring).
