Abstract
The author describes the NLQ approach to information retrieval from databases in the context of natural-language interfaces (NLIs) in particular and interfaces to database-management systems (DBMSs) in general. NLQ, a personal computer-based natural-language query system to relational databases, embodies three characteristics for database interfaces of the future: (1) the ability to interface to different DBMSs on various hots, (2) the ability to manipulate data retrieved from the DBMS in other software packages (e.g. spreadsheets), and (3) the facility for the end-user to customize his own interface
