Abstract
The design of a speech coding system that uses trellis-coded vector quantization (TCVQ) and adaptive predictive coding (APC) is formulated. A method for optimizing the TCVQ codebooks is presented. Simulation results are given for encoding rates of 16 and 9.6 kb/s for a variety of coder parameters. At an encoding rate of 16 kb/s, informal listening tests found very little difference between the original sentences and the reconstructions. The 9.6 kb/s reconstructions were found to be natural sounding and of good quality
