Abstract
Influence of the leading vehicle to the follower in a single lane traffic flow and stochastic variations of headways lead to the formation of the vehicle platoons. In this paper we use the analogy between single lane traffic flows and single server queueing systems for the analysis of the vehicle platoons. We derive formulas for the mean number of vehicles in a platoon, mean number of subsequent vehicles in a free flow state, as well as the mean length of a platoon and inter-platoon distance.
