Abstract
This paper considers the use of HVDC stability control with Wide Area Measurements in order to extend the transmission boundary capability limits. Both event- and response-based controls are considered. The event-based action is triggered faster, whilst the response-based action is slower but is more sensitive to the actual system response. The response-based action has the additional benefit of forming a defence against more complex phenomena which may not be covered in the event-based design. Studies are carried out on a reduced equivalent model of the GB network. The results show that the HVDC link stability control based on wide area measurements has potential to provide significant additional capacity for the Scotland-England boundary.
