Abstract :
Traditionally the broadcasting of single channel operation has involved the inclusion of a considerable amount of broadcast equipment in the programme playout chain. This approach is unsustainable in the multi-channel environment where the total cost is the sum of all channels being handled. During the process of implementing some of the largest multi-channel systems in Europe we have been faced with a number of key issues that required consideration by all parties during the early stages of planning and prior to detailed system design. These have been grouped together and are highlighted in this paper. The introduction of new technology in the form of video servers and multi-channel automation systems has proven to have both a significant and direct effect on cost and operational effectiveness of multi-channel operation. A cost comparison including capital, ongoing maintenance and operational manpower is tabulated. These costs are for a typical near video on demand (NVOD) system and a separate general entertainment system
