Abstract
This paper discusses the successful operation of standard forms of contract from the perspective of someone involved in drafting the IMechE/IEE model forms and also with some experience of acting as the “Engineer”. The starts with the question ”what makes a good contract?”, then looks at the selection of the right conditions of contract for a particular application, including model forms and potential pitfalls in drafting. Some practical advice is given on how the Engineer can contribute to the success of the contract by the way he administers the conditions
