Constructing a Foundation for Semantic Structure of Korean Heritage Information: A Study on Creating a Substructure of Korean Heritage Portal by Implementing CIDOC CRM

This paper focuses on the building of basic conditions for the Korean cultural heritage ontology structure by using CIDOC CRM (ICOMs International Committee for Documentation Conceptual Reference Model). Issues with using the CIDOC CRM have been raised in other countries, such as Finland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. Heritage information structures on the web in Korea are analyzed. In this research, we define the obstacles for Korean heritage portals to operate semantically. These obstacles are classified into three categories: the intrinsic Korean heritage metadata challenges, the challenges that falls between metadata and CIDOC CRM, and lastly, the CIDOC CRM itself. Detailed challenges are raised within the categories and possible solutions are proposed. This study would propose a long-term plan for heritage information in Korea to be semantically interlinked. Consequently, users could acquire knowledge related to heritage more easily and meaningfully.
