Abstract
In the paper a comparison between the variable reluctance synchronous motor (VRSM) with cageless segmental rotor and the cage induction motor (IM), from different point of view, including the steady-state and dynamic performances, and not only, is made. Two sets of counterpart VRSM and IM, the VRSM constructed on the same stator steel lamination and frame as the original IM, were considered. The calculated or obtained on the test bench results are given to sustain the conclusion that VRSM might be an alternative to IM in some specific applications.
