Abstract
This paper discusses the EMC problem faced with the introduction of new railway traction technology and focuses on the safety aspects of electrical interference with signalling equipment. Although achieving compatibility can be difficult this paper poses solutions which can solve the problem of compatibility between new traction technology and existing signalling systems. The paper discusses the track circuit, traction technology, EMC assessment (track circuit susceptibility, conducted emission measurements, failure modes effects and criticality analysis, safety) and interference monitoring
