Abstract
Adjustable speed electric motor drives are undergoing a transition from DC to AC machines in all fields of application, from the smallest to the largest power ratings. Macroelectronics and microelectronics are complementary, providing the power as well as the intelligence for the complex control functions. In contrast to DC drives, there is a choice of many different combinations of power converters and AC machines, each having particular advantages, but a common principle of control has evolved. This review outlines this transition and points to future developments in the field of AC motor drive control
