  • Abstract
In this paper, an expert system (ES) developed for the monitoring and diagnosis of anaerobic wastewater treatment plants is presented. This system was used in the treatment of wastewater from a alkaline peroxide mechanical pulp (APMP) production factory. The reactor is expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB). The expert system puts emphasis on the monitoring and designing of two aspects of an anaerobic biological treatment system, that are, PH control and the prevention of acidification. The development of the fuzzy expert system was carried out by selecting the on-line variables to be used, building the fuzzy membership functions for each input and output variable to develop a knowledge-based rule structure. Finally, the expert system was used in an actual system; the results show that good monitoring effect can be achieved.
