Abstract
In the 30 years since the initial introduction of magnetically encoded tickets in 1966, the railway ticketing systems have been the subject of dramatic changes. This paper discusses the basic reasons for, and against, the evolution from a piece of paper, through magnetic strip cards, to a smartcard using London Underground as the focus
