Abstract
A filter has been developed for edge enhancement based on the notion of informativeness. It enhances edges according to their frequency of occurrence in an image rather than their strength. The filter succeeds in achieving local contrast enhancement even in the vicinity of strong edges. In addition it provides a more complete edge map than other techniques for human viewing or for input to later stages of processing, for example, segmentation or coding
