Abstract :
The burst-server is proposed as a method to solve throughput problems of degradation and unfairness in ATM WANs. It can store and forward the bursts based on burst bandwidth reservation protocols for applications such as ATM LAN interconnection. The burst-server architecture is characterized through comparison with connectionless server architecture. Performance evaluation results show that burst-servers reduce the intensity of the unfairness for long distance traffic and maximize throughput. The proposed burst-server architecture is necessary for ATM WANs to transfer high speed bursty data efficiently
