  • Abstract
Pedestrians will conflict with the turn-right or clearance vehicles when crossing an intersection, resulting in the behavior of pedestrians compressing motor vehicle lanes. By video survey of this phenomenon, we found that the signal timing, pedestrians´ forward inclination, pedestrians´ psychological factors, interference among motor vehicles and pedestrians´ waiting zones were occupied were the reasons of behavior. Several measures are presented to solve this problem, including assign proper signal time, ensure area of pedestrians´ waiting zones, and promote visual appreciation around the intersection, perfect traffic facilities within the intersection and the guidance of an effective transport strategy. The study describes the behavior of cross intersection pedestrians from a new point of view, gives several approaches to the effective management of intersections, provides a valid way to ensure the safety of pedestrians and maintain the traffic order at intersections.
