  • Abstract
This paper covers various aspects of the system engineering of terrestrial microwave radio systems. It begins by outlining the requirements for an active repeater station and discussing the methodology of choosing new sites. A brief treatment of passive repeater engineering is included. The new International Telecommunications Union (ITU) G.826 performance criteria is discussed including it´s impact on radio systems. Fading on microwave radio links is analysed in detail. Other aspects of link design including various performance issues; such as adaptive equalisation, automatic transmit power control (ATPC), forward error correction (FEC), and early warning switching are also briefly covered. Finally, diversity techniques applied to digital radio links are discussed
