Abstract
Fast reservation protocol has been introduced as a multiplexing method for bursty sources such as LAN to LAN interconnections. In this paper a queuing model for a fast reservation protocol (FRP) is presented. This model allows the calculation of overall delay performance of this protocol, including the delay caused by the FRP unit itself. The analysis shows which traffic sources are suitable to be controlled by this FRP method, and the critical role of FRP unit on the performance. The performance bounds for this protocol is also analyzed to indicate possible areas of improvement. It is expected that LAN to LAN interconnections are among the first applications that will be supported by ATM networks
