Abstract :
Multichannel switching is a switching technique which allows packets to be switched optimally to an arbitrary channel within a channel group (a bundle of channels interconnecting a pair of nodes). It allows higher bandwidth utilisation to be achieved because traffic imbalance among various channels of the same channel group is removed. Multichannel switching has been exploited in the MULTIPAC switch, a design with input queueing and an internally nonblocking switch fabric. Previous performance studies of space division packet switches have concluded in favour of output queueing systems. The author believes that the combined effect of output queueing and multichannel switching can yield even better performance. A high performance Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) switch founded on this idea is described in this paper. The design is nonblocking, has excellent throughput-delay performance and does not give rise to out-of-sequence problems
