Abstract
Summary form only given. Enormous advances have been achieved in the last decade in creating broadband networking technologies (ATM standards, ATM hardware and software developments, fast IP techniques, Gigabit LANs and so on). We describe and summarize the state of the art in Gigabit ATM from the perspectives of technological accomplishments and calibration for near-term capabilities of hardware and software systems. We then discuss some of the research efforts in pushing such technologies into the forefront of wireless networks. In the meantime, ongoing explosive growth in the Internet and other data networks have prompted tremendous interests in Gigabit Ethernet and other related LAN/WAN efforts. Perspectives on these latter activities are also discussed
