Abstract
This paper presents an algorithm for designing 1-D FIR filters using genetic algorithms. We examine the usefulness of L∞ (minimax) error norm in the design procedure. We also present the application of a ternary encoding scheme applied to the filter coefficients and its effect on obtaining optimum filters. An example of a 1-D FIR filter is given using the above methodology to illustrate the usefulness and utilities of the proposed technique
