Abstract :
We report design, fabrication, and characterization of a high refractive index micro planar lens for coupling of light to 2D photonic crystal waveguides (PhC WG) on an AlGaAs membrane. The lens reduced coupling loss by 4dB and the depth of fine Fabry-Perot fringes in a transmission spectrum by 1/10, relative to a PhC waveguide terminated by a cleaved facet. The lens not only stabilizes a coupling performance over different waveguides formed on different chips but also considerably tolerates the degree of precision required in aligning external optical components.
